named crown prince. This name became his taboo name when
he ascended the throne in 1022.
2. This is the final version of the posthumous name given in 1083.

Emperor Renzong (May 30, 1010 – April 30, 1063) was the fourth emperor of the Song Dynasty of China. His personal name was Zhao Zhen (??). He reigned from 1022 to 1063. Renzong was the son of Emperor Zhenzong of Song China. Despite his long reign of over 40 years, Renzong is not widely known. His reign marked the high point of Song influences and powers but was also the beginning of its slow disintegration that would persist over the next century and a half.

One possible reason behind its weakness is its interpretation of its own foreign policy. The official policy of the Song Dynasty at the time was one of pacifism and this caused the weakening of the military. Western Xia took advantage of this deterioration and waged small scale wars against Song China near the borders.

When Renzong came into power, he issued decrees to strengthen the military and paid massive bribes to the Liao government, an adversary of Western Xia, in the hope that this would ensure the safety of Song China.

However these policies involved a heavy price. Taxes were increased severely and the peasants lived in a state of perpetual poverty. This eventually caused organized rebellions to take place throughout the country and the breakdown of the government.

Renzong died in 1063 without an heir. His temple name means “Benevolent Ancestor”.

Talloires Declaration

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The Talloires Declaration is a declaration for sustainability, created for and by presidents of institutions of higher learning. Jean Mayer, Tufts University president, convened a conference of 22 universities in 1990 in Talloires, France. This document is a declaration that institutions of higher learning will be world leaders in developing, creating, supporting and maintaining sustainability. The registrar for the declaration is the Washington, DC-based ULSF organization, or University Leaders for a Sustainable Future. As of March, 2006, 329 college and university presidents have signed the declaration. These span 49 countries on five continents, with 106 in the United States alone. Virginia encompasses 23 of the US signatories.

Text of the Talloires Declaration

University Presidents for a Sustainable Future We, the presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors of universities from all regions of the world are deeply concerned about the unprecedented scale and speed of environmental pollution and degradation, and the depletion of natural resources. Local, regional, and global air pollution; accumulation and distribution of toxic wastes; destruction and depletion of forests, soil, and water; depletion of the ozone layer and emission of “green house” gases threaten the survival of humans and thousands of other living species, the integrity of the earth and its biodiversity, the security of nations, and the heritage of future generations. These environmental changes are caused by inequitable and unsustainable production and consumption patterns that aggravate poverty in many regions of the world. We believe that urgent actions are needed to address these fundamental problems and reverse the trends. Stabilization of human population, adoption of environmentally sound industrial and agricultural technologies, reforestation, and ecological restoration are [crucial elements in creating an equitable and sustainable future for all humankind in harmony with nature. Universities have a major role in the education, research, policy formation, and information exchange necessary to make these goals possible. The university heads must provide the leadership and support to mobilize internal and external resources so that their institutions respond to this urgent challenge. We, therefore, agree to take the following actions:

  1. Use every opportunity to raise public, government, industry, foundation, and university awareness by publicly addressing the urgent need to move toward an environmentally sustainable future.
  2. Encourage all universities to engage in education, research, policy formation, and information exchange on population, environment, and development to move toward a sustainable future.
  3. Establish programs to produce expertise in environmental management, sustainable economic development, population, and related fields to ensure that all university graduates are environmentally literate and responsible citizens.
  4. Create programs to develop the capability of university faculty to teach environmental literacy to all undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students.
  5. Set an example of environmental responsibility by establishing programs of resource conservation, recycling, and waste reduction at the universities.
  6. Encourage the involvement of government (at all levels), foundations, and industry in supporting university research, education, policy formation, and information exchange in environmentally sustainable development. Expand work with nongovernmental organizations to assist in finding solutions to environmental problems.
  7. Convene school deans and environmental practitioners to develop research, policy, information exchange programs, and curricula for an environmentally sustainable future.
  8. Establish partnerships with primary and secondary schools to help develop the capability of their faculty to teach about population, environment, and sustainable development issues.
  9. Work with the UN Conference on Environmental and Development, the UN Environment Programme, and other national and international organizations to promote a worldwide university effort toward a sustainable future.
  10. Establish a steering committee and a secretariat to continue this momentum and inform and support each other’s efforts in carrying out this declaration.

Plot

Gerry is about two driving companions, both called Gerry. “Gerry”, a slang term used by Matt Damon and Ben and Casey Affleck meaning “screw up,” is used several times in the film as a verb or adjective in addition to being used as a proper noun. Van Sant revealed in interviews that Damon and Affleck used the term before the movie had even been named. The characters are apparently on a hike to view a “thing” at the end of a wilderness trail, but after some walking, talking, and a short foot race they agree on their mutual disinterest in the site and decide to turn around. They soon realize that they are lost in the desert.

After several days of wandering around mostly in silence, both protagonists collapse due to fatigue and dehydration. The weaker of the two (Affleck) proclaims that he is “leaving.” Whereupon, Damon struggles on top of Affleck, dispassionately strangling him. After some time, he’s awakened by the sound of an engine and rises to his feet. Walking only a few hundred yards or so, he discovers a busy highway on the horizon. Gerry catches a ride with a family, whom he watches in awkward silence.

The plot of the film closely resembles the events surrounding the death of David Coughlin, who was killed by his friend Raffi Kodikian after the two got lost in Rattlesnake Canyon in New Mexico. It also bears a resemblance to the confirmed true Darwin Award story called “Dry Spell” where a man on a survival hike died of dehydration only a half mile from his truck It is the first film of Van Sant’s “Death Trilogy”, three films based on true-life deaths.

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The Moatsü Mong festival is celebrated by the Ao people of Nagaland, India.

Moatsü is celebrated in the first week of May every year. Various rituals are performed during this period. The Aos observe Moatsü Mong after the sowing is done. The festival provides the Aos a period of recreation and entertainment after the stressful work of clearing fields, burning jungles and sowing seeds, cleaning up the Tsubu (wells) and repairs and construction of houses by elders of the Putu Menden, stretching over a week. The Moatsü festival is marked by peppy songs and dances. The whole festival with full of merry making and fun is observed only for three days from 1st to 3rd of May. During this festival one of the symbolic celebrations is Sangpangtu, where a big fire is lit and men and women sit around it. Men & women putting on the complete best attire and the womenfolk serve the wine and meat. Righteous man who lives by the guidance of the Almighty forecast whether good or evil days are awaiting the people and the village by readings of the celebration of the Moatsü festival.

Customs and rituals

The natural customary practice of the forefathers was competing in making the best rice-beer and rearing the best possible pigs and cows to be slaughtered during the festival. The womenfolk weave the best of traditional garments and adorn themselves with all their fineries. They join the men folk in dancing, eating and drinking and composing warrior songs. Singing songs in praise of the lover and the village as a whole is done and the older men folk encourages the young people to be bold and heroic to defend and protect them from enemies as head-hunting was practiced during the fore-fathers time.

The festival’s meaning

The principal aim of this festival is to invoke Almighty God’s blessings after finishing the diverse activities, such as:

  • Repairs and construction of houses by elders of the Putu Menden (Village Council)
  • Marriages in spring season
  • Ploughing of old and new Jhum Kheti
  • Cleaning up the Tsubü (Water Wells)
